Staying Motivated at Work Because Your Life Depends On It

Forward: I posted this video and wrote the accompanying article below in 2014. A lot has changed in my life since then so take it with a grain of salt. There are some learning lessons in this post as it got 15,000 comments and the video got 4.2 million views.

Staying Motivated at Work Because Your Life Depends On It

This video is where every inspirational sales copy cat movie got it’s inspiration from. It’s quoted by REAL sales people because they do whatever it takes to close a deal.

work harder:

1. Do more research

2. Educate themselves in school

3. Educate themselves on the job

4. Get smarter by reading

5. Most importantly listening

All of this in order to sell more things. It’s not abusive, it’s extreme, it’s satirical and it’s a dose of reality.

Satirical because no sales manager will speak this way but the reality is every sales manager wants their people willing to do what it takes to sell more NO EXCUSES & you should want this for yourself, be better at everything you do NO EXCUSES.

If you don’t do a good job at work do you really think or expect a company to keep you around? I am guessing you work for the DMV if that’s the case. If someone really feels they need to speak to you like this, THE REALITY IS YOU’RE FIRED.

There is no speech to motivate a mediocre worker, you either rise to the occasion or eventually you’re out. That is called business. The faster a business person can see whether you’re a producer or non-producer the better for business as negativity (a non-producer and complainer) can bring down a company’s culture.

Of course if you’re a non-producer and think everything should just be handed to you and you do not try and earn something then of course you hate this clip, you hate me and you hate the system (maybe work for the DMV?).

If you have an inner voice, train it to think like Alec Baldwin’s voice in this movie, the message:

BE HUNGRY, WORK SMARTER, WORK HARDER, DO WHATER IT TAKES TO GET SMARTER, IF THERE ISN’T A WAY MAKE A WAY, GET UP EVERYDAY READY TO ATTACK YOUR GOALS, CRUSH YOUR GOALS, DON’T KNOW HOW? LEARN HOW!

Always push yourself to do better, be better and eventually sell better.

This is a speech to motivate the unmotivatable, the complainers, the life long victims of circumstance which would never happen because, if it had gotten to that point you would have already been fired a long time before this.

Every successful CEO has to be the #1 best Sales person for the company and that’s where it all starts and ends.

The sad part here is that some people will watch this video and read what I wrote and get angry at me, perhaps hate me for posting this. The truth is the ones who get angry at me will never be successful because they do not understand the message or put in the work:

It’s the message not the speech that should be driving you to be better everyday, that’s what it takes

You have to sacrifice time, energy and hard work (which 99% of the population is not willing to do) and this is why we have a 1% out there making most of the money. They decided to focus their efforts on a career that was very lucrative, put in the time to learn how to be good at it (10,000 hours +) and applied their knowledge they’ve learned to their craft and executed on a dream.

Now I am not talking about the people who inherit money. Those people have had more privilege and opportunity to be successful no question. You can hate them for it and say life isn’t fair and curse the world for you not being born into wealth. Or option two is focusing on yourself, perhaps learn how their family made their fortune, who made the fortune for the family originally, research and try to apply some of the techniques to modern day business.

Some of what made rich dynasty’s in the past are illegal today so I would not recommend those strategies. One such family is the Forbes Family (yes Forbes Magazine Forbes) who made their riches off of illegal opium smuggling in the 1800's. Stop idolizing born into money people, it’s not productive.

With that said, there are some seriously motivated, legitimate, hard ass working people who carved out a legacy for their families without breaking the law in our lifetimes.

You might check out Ralph Lauren’s story.

• His family didn’t lend him money

• His family didn’t have accumulated wealth to pass down to him

• His family didn’t have a successful business already in place that they passed down to him from parents to son.

Ralph Lauren hustled his way into mega-success.

RESEARCH PEOPLE LIKE RALPH LAUREN.

FIND OTHERS LIKE HIM AND RESEARCH THEM, TAKE NOTES, MAKE A PLAN, TAKE ACTION, MAKE SACRIFICES!

Often taking the first step is the hardest in business but with the advent of the internet a side business can be started in a few hours. So what’s your excuse?

As Thomas Edison once said, “Most people miss opportunity because it’s dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

We’re all a little guilty of this, ALL OF US at some point in life. Don’t beat yourself up about the past, do something about it in the present that can turn it all around.

If you want to live paycheck to paycheck and work really hard for that paycheck doing manual backbreaking labor everyday and you want to continue like this we all have respect for you and thank you for it.

THIS VIDEO CLIP ISN’T FOR YOU.

If you want to work your job, pay your bills and live “your American Dream” and you’re happy with where you are in life then we all respect you for your choice and thank you.

THIS VIDEO CLIP ISN’T FOR YOU.

If you want to do the least amount of work for the most amount of money then great, we all respect you for your choices (good luck).

THIS VIDEO CLIP ISN’T FOR YOU.

The people who get this clip understand the message and will watch it as many times as needed to re-energize their motivation, I know I do.

There is no shortage of money out there, only a shortage of people trying to go get it.

NOW PUT IN WORK!
